Listers are quick to put aside their condemnation of invasive species once they attain that coveted status of exotic: not native, not fully naturalized, but established well enough to be countable by the prevailing authority. Rancho Naturalista Lodge, Costa Rica, or in the Land of Coffee and Chocolate

Black-bellied Whistling-Ducks , Muscovy Ducks and Blue-winged Teals were around us, together with Green , Great and Little Blue Herons , Cattle and Great White Egrets , Black-crowned and Yellow-crowned Night-Herons , plus one locally rare Pinnated Bittern in the floating vegetation, as well as several dozen Neotropical Cormorants.

In 2018, there were 1,745 birds living in 92 different zoos and collections. They were my target species, and I remember being delighted in not only seeing them well, but finding feeding flocks that were remarkably unconcerned about being watched. Here they were easy to overlook.

A World Turned Upside Down

Still, I was nervous when I pushed a collection of highly-qualified friends (four ornithologists and a botany professor) to accompany me to the small San José de las Torres reservoir, just above the city of Morelia. There were plenty of other birds in the area, with 72 species around the reservoir for the day.

Birds with white on them are much more likely to take the form of goodies like the Snowy Cotinga , or two species of tityras. The Caribbean slope of Costa Rica also differs from the islands in having a lot more bird species. To make up for our collective absence, we did a trip there last weekend.

The star of such huge concentrations is the massive Jabiru , towering over a diverse collection of South American waterbirds such as Sunbittern , Plumbeous Ibis , and Southern Screamer.
