In 2018, there were 1,745 birds living in 92 different zoos and collections. They were my target species, and I remember being delighted in not only seeing them well, but finding feeding flocks that were remarkably unconcerned about being watched. Here they were easy to overlook.

I understand there are still people out there who deny human-induced climate change. Still, I was nervous when I pushed a collection of highly-qualified friends (four ornithologists and a botany professor) to accompany me to the small San José de las Torres reservoir, just above the city of Morelia. And the Black-polled Yellowthroat ?

Surely they couldn’t be the same species, across a continent. Human-created habitats like road edges, pastures, and railroad right-of-ways suit them to a tee, so it hardly seems fair to call them the locusts when we are the ones who have expanded explosively and stripped the land bare. They can carry parasites to humans.

Nevertheless, the one question will remain as to why we toss this habitat aside as if we all collectively made a decision to pick one habitat and dismiss it. While we continue to decimate our short and tall grass prairies many species reach their inevitable peril. have over-developed these areas for agricultural uses.

Found throughout South America in ever-dwindling numbers these extremely beautiful birds – threatened by habitat destruction and collection for the wild bird trade – are often difficult to see and hard to find. Each bird, regardless of species, seems perfectly content to wait for the other to make the first move toward the colpa.

Bad developments indeed, particularly as the White-backed Vulture was found to be a good avian biomonitor species – if it does badly, most likely the environment as a whole will do badly, too. Vultures, therefore, tend not to nest in areas with high elephant populations ( source ).
