My cats refuse to even try Fiery Minivets. While my cats like the taste of the Greater Racket-tailed Drongo , they tend to look fairly ridiculous eating them, as the racket tail sticks out of their mouth. I agree that they look toxic, particularly the females. Even the scientific species name is igneus , identical to the English name.

Lunch at the tavern brought a European Serin , and the drive back added a Little Owl on a sign post by the road, and a few soaring birds: White Stork , Great White Pelican and a Short-toed Eagle. A bit later on, saltworks contained more than a hundred Greater Flamingos , plus one of several roadside European Rollers.

In a recent case involving my own facility, an immature bald eagle was hit by a car. People passed the eagle often. It is hard to be apathetic when you see for yourself a majestic eagle dying of lead poisoning from the fragments of a lead bullet or lead sinker, both still in use today.

There are a lot of predators drawn to such abundance with Eurasian Marsh Harriers and Greater Spotted Eagles known to take chicks from the heronry. Less often seen are Blackbuck and Jungle Cat. It is possible that some birds were attempting a second brood after losing their first. Eggs often fall victim to the ubiquitous House Crow.

Feral cats are a huge problem in Australia and they do take a lot of the eggs. These are not pet cats, but cats that have only ever lived in the wild and can survive in extreme conditions. They will chase Black Kites , but will fly away from the nest if a White-bellied Sea Eagle approaches as if there is no reason to be there.

Black Kites , Whistling Kites , Brahminy Kites and White-bellied Sea-Eagles are soon chased off if they fly along the coast in the vicinity of the nest and the Pied Oystercatcher returns to the eggs. The footprints lead clearly to the nest site and the birds fly up into the air chasing any potential predators.

In fact, the very first person to guess, Nick , managed to get the third quiz picture correct by calling it a Bald Eagle. Of course, that was the easiest of the three because though the bird in the image is captive, a bird that was injured and can’t be returned to the wild, Bald Eagles do occur regularly and naturally in Queens.
