Acorn Woodpecker and Black-crested Titmouse were plentiful and confiding. Amazingly, everyone showed up at dawn except for one person, who’d had a near-death experience with me on Colombia’s Sumapaz paramo, an acceptable excuse for a no-show. These parrots breed inside cavities in cliffs and they are very particular about the cliff.

Three live and breed here, two migrate through the country in large numbers (one of those also breeds here in small numbers), and another migrates through and winters in Costa Rica. Rail-Heron? I’d love to have known where and when the Great Spotted Woodpecker in my photograph below was ringed, but though the ring is clearly visible, the number stamped on it isn’t. Black-tailed godwits winter in large numbers on the estuaries of both Norfolk and Suffolk, and we know that nearly all these birds breed in Iceland.

Unfortunately, the Ashy Drongos did not exactly do what he predicted that they would do – mob potential predators more frequently during the breeding season and mob the more dangerous predator (in this case, the Black Eagle) more intensely. If you do not want to be put in a cage, it presumably helps to be a bit aggressive.

But previous experience with Ejido Triquillo taught me that another species might turn up during the spring. The Olive-sided Flycatcher breeds in Canada and the western United States, and winters mostly in northern South America. I imagine the female bosses the male around, but maybe I am anthropomorphizing there based on my experience in recently working on an apartment with my wife. This Grey-capped Pygmy Woodpecker in particular is a species I would like to get much better photos of. While the female is less hidden, sadly, it is also less attractive.

I counted them very roughly, but I do have a lot of experience estimating flocks. They do not build nests, but occupy old nests of Rooks and breed colonially among them. The featured image above shows a female incubating eggs from my first resident breeding pair back in 2007. Violet-green Swallows will nest solitarily or in colonies and in my experience seem much more mellow than other swallow species. This year I have two pair nesting on two different trails!

Not to mention, its brilliantly bulbous crimson throat, bloated during breeding season must be a sight! They really appeared to enjoy this, because as soon as they swam back to the rocks they would line up again to repeat the experience. The Magnificent Frigatebird is the bird I would want to see.
