(In Intriguingly, there are far more Bald Ibises in captivity than there are in the wild, for this is a bird that breeds readily in confinement. Such an intimate encounter with one of the world’s rarest birds was a memorable experience.

That still leaves 11 Warblers that breed in Michoacán. But my experience suggests there is a fair amount of geographical overlap between the two ranges in my area. Like the Common Yellowthroat , the Yellow Warbler breeds no further south than the central Mexican highlands. It does breed in the U.S. But do they warble?

However, the typical birding experience for someone down here also includes a large menagerie of other species such as Orange-winged Parrot , Mitred Parakeet , Egyptian Goose and Nutmeg Mannikin. Common Hill Mynas are easy to locate due to their loud, shrill calls. Could it be due to climate? Lack of feeding opportunities?

After that experience, I stopped complaining about their hides, realising that they are as good as they ever will be. For example, the White-headed Duck is nowadays a rarity in Europe (okay, excluding Spain, I know… that Spain …), but until some 50 years ago, it used to breed in Serbia. They got the message right.

My extensive birding experience allows me to be very confident that the bird below is a Rosefinch. In the non-breeding season, Common Merganser all look pretty much like females. Not a bad look though – more attractive than the male breeding plumage, I think. It is indeed rufous-ish.

In my (fortunately rather limited) experience, Chinese karaoke singers adapt their singing based on the chosen song, the audience, and the amount of alcohol in their blood. These striking and inquisitive jays were perhaps the bird of the trip for me, and we took our time to soak in the experience of encountering these wonderful birds. This poorly documented swallow is a breeding endemic to these high mountains. A little further along the road, we stopped at a stake-out for Sinaloa Martin.
