The wildlife steward boasts 8 pairs of Common Kingfishers along this stretch as the stream diverts through small wildfowl ponds. These ponds and the larger Cedar Lake and collection pond hold Tufted Duck , Greylag Goose and Eurasian Moorhen. The exotics have now mostly been dispersed to other collections, but a few remain.

I was also notified of a study of Brant behavior that is being done collectively by wildlife agencies from New Jersey, New York, and Canada. For all I know, my report of this bird might be the first indication that the bird survived the round trip migration to and from the breeding grounds.

Besides his murrelet, Kittlitz collected the only known specimens of the Kosrae Starling , a lovely long-beaked black bird that deserved better. The southern species of what was the Xantus’s Murrelet is now called the Guadalupe Murrelet , a soothing name derived from the island where the bulk of the population breeds.

I’m not sure what the collective noun for a group of petrels is, but the vets and wildlife carers of New Zealand might be forgiven for thinking that it might be a wreck after this week. It breeds on the Chatham Islands and some of the islands south of New Zealand, as well as Gough and Tristan da Cunha in the Atlantic.

As I have explained before these islands are the best place for a lot of the birding here because they are more easily protected from introduced mammals which wreck such havoc on the wildlife here. Since 1984 it has been planted with native bush and pests were controlled, and is now used as a wildlife reserve.

Oil begins to wash up on the beaches throughout May and June of 2010 May 6, 2010 Oil washes ashore on the Chandeleur Islands off the Louisiana coast, an important nesting and breeding area for many bird species. June 2, 2010 BP apparently bans workers from showing dead or dying wildlife and from talking to the press.

They breed across Canada and Alaska’s boreal forest near ponds and lakes, using nest holes made by woodpeckers, almost exclusively flickers. Even collecting one piece after another, I didn’t manage to see the whole picture, but after a lot of effort, I collected enough pieces to ID the Eastern Olivaceous Warbler , only the first of a dozen that will be chock chock chocking from fruiting mulberries. They have sloping sides and a flat top, meant for birds to breed on.

The Guan had never been seen in the wild after Polish Naturalist Wladyslaw Taczanowski collected one individual in 1876. Nineteenth and early twentieth century naturalists collected birds on long and arduous exploratory expeditions in the New World.
