(In Storks, Ibises and Spoonbills of the World states that “disturbance by local people, tourists, and egg and zoo collectors has similarly reduced the colonies, and more protection is vital”. In 1890 an estimated 3,000 pairs nested in Birecik.)

Don’t Ignore the Barnacles – they’re Real Birds

The European Breeding Bird Atlas 2 makes interesting reading. Originally confined to the Arctic, breeding [of Barnacle Geese] is now confirmed throughout much of the Baltic coast S North Sea. This Barnacle goose is part of a resident breeding flock in North Norfolk.

Protection for a fee: Band-tailed Gulls and Red-legged Cormorants

With birds, this happens when one takes prey or other food caught or collected by another. Instead of hovering, some gulls have set up territories within breeding colonies of Humboldt seabirds. This system of “fee” in exchange for protection from being overwhelmed by many thieves seems to work.

Part of the Labudovo okno Ramsar Wetland and protected within the Deliblato Sands Special Nature Reserve , this section of the Danube, downriver from Belgrade, Serbia, is unique for its wide shallows, before the river narrows downstream from the village of Ram. When to visit: best during winter and migration season, but also breeding season.

Birding Sepilok, Borneo (Part 2)

In the non-breeding season, male Baya Weavers sometimes enter the basket-making trade, often with considerable success. Meanwhile, the females seem to have a much more relaxing life, at least in this early stage of the breeding season. The associated bird species seek out drongos, apparently relying upon them heavily for protection.

The Endangered Andean Flamingo

Egg harvesting to sell as food was intensive then, with thousands taken annually from the breeding colonies in Chile. Egg collection for local consumption still continues at lower scale. The Andean Flamingo is now protected under the Endangered Species Act of 1973.
