My office closed early and my husband works alone in the woods, so we sheltered in place fairly early and avoided exposure. I don’t mind the bird poop they leave behind! I began a love affair with birds and birding in my early twenties, but the COVID-19 crisis has taught me to be grateful for their presence.

Gazetted as the “nature monument” in 2013, one of the few remaining – Bojcinska Forest by the village of Progar covers 670 ha / 1650 ac, with around 108 bird species and some 60 species of mammals. During WWII, the forest was used as a base of the local Partisan squad (the communist resistance), hiding in subterranean shelters.

We are very lucky that we regularly observe this pair of birds on the Northern end of Cable Beach. There are some dense mangrove bushes there and they can shelter from the heat in the shade. There are not many bird species that you can almost guarantee to be in a pair on Valentine’s Day.

There are plenty of lookouts and shelters, but there is no drinking water available at the toilet facilities, so you need to carry plenty of water.
