Unfortunately, developers are hungrily eying the 70-acre parcel despite some local opposition and the fact that it is a wetland that provides excellent habitat to a variety of birds (to say nothing of mammals, insects, etc). As you all know, “brown” can be quite good on a bird and it comes in all colours and sizes! One of the best places to find “brown” around Broome is on the highway as you head south as there is wide open country and plenty of fences for birds to perch on. Here we discovered a beautiful bird.

Over the last few weeks we have seen Roebuck Bay slowly empty as the shorebirds head north to breed. Not all shorebirds migrate, so we will see some of our resident shorebirds breed in the coming months. Red-capped Plovers and Pied Oystercatchers will soon be investing time and energy into breeding along our coastline.

I know it sounds strange, especially when the folks at Mission San Juan Capistrano are trying to coax them back by playing recordings of the bird’s mating calls. Because I am a local Audubon board member, I was recently contacted by a bird lover who witnessed Cliff Swallow nests being destroyed at the marina where they dock their boat.

It was made a National Park in the 1980s and is a major breeding and nesting area for over 30,000 seabirds. One of the sheltered bays on Isla Isabel. The boat-trip over to the island is far from uneventful and the pelagic birding is very rewarding. A male Magnificent Frigatebird in full breeding regalia.

There were still birds feeding on the reef as the tide pushed in fast and these were mostly migratory shorebirds and also Reef Egrets. Of the twenty six Sooty Oystercatchers fourteen were first year birds and would have moved to the mainland with the non-breeding flock during this time of year.

It is at the same time of year that the migratory shorebirds that spend part of each year in Broome are also breeding, but in the Arctic. They sheltered the chicks under their wings and when there are only two chicks one parent can do this, but with three it seems to be more of a shared duty.

One of the most camouflaged birds in Australia is the Tawny Frogmouth and we often hear them at night when we are camping in the bush, but the chance of seeing them is less likely. It has been twelve weeks now since the first pair of Pied Oystercatchers attempted to breed along the stretch of beach that we survey and as with each year there have been setbacks.
