Their movements and breeding is determined by rainfall and for that reason they are not always where you think they might be. There were no ducks at the lake, but at a quarry that had filled with rain water they were bobbing around and also sheltered somewhat from the wind. Even the narrow shade under a gate is a great place to seek shelter from the sun on a hot day. This land is currently very green from the recent rains and in very wet years it floods and becomes a great breeding area for terns.
