A Fierce Cartoon Bird: Steller’s Sea Eagle on Hokkaido

10,000 Birds

Maybe the latter is because the bird is so plump, or maybe it is because (at least to me) the head looks like it has been created by a somewhat amateurish wood carver. Another danger to the species comes from lead poisoning as they eat the carcasses of deer killed by hunters ( source ).

Some Germans have a bird – A short birding trip through the German language

10,000 Birds

Having come back to the blog in whatever form and persistency, the overarching subject of language in birding seemed to be a suitable and deserving theme since bird names were part of my original beat. How have birds infiltrated our everyday language, even of non-birders? No birds required.

The Jewel Hunter: A Book Review About One Birder’s Quest for Pittas and Beer

10,000 Birds

It’s my fantasy and it’s yours: Quit the job, say good-bye to the family, and bird. British birder Chris Gooddie, my new birding hero, not only dreamed the fantasy, he lived it. That’s Pitta, people, not Antpitta, which is what I foolishly first envisioned, having never birded beyond the Americas.)
