I was fortunate enough to stay in a cabin with extensive and thoughtful landscaping, so merely sitting on the porch with my coffee in the morning netted birds like Rufous and Calliope Hummingbird , Western Tanager , and even a conveniently calling Pacific Slope Flycatcher in the distance. Now, none of these are great rarities.

We are lucky in Broome that due to our remoteness we rarely get invasive bird species. They are an aggressive species and soon take over from the native birds as they compete for nest sites.

I spent the early morning hours the last two days on the beach in the eastern Rockaways, taking advantage of slanted light and cooperative birds. Semipalmated Plovers , like this young bird, were all over the beach. Double-crested Cormorants are one of those birds I usually ignore. I appreciated that. Multitasking shorebirds!
