In front of us, the river is two miles wide… and it is paved with birds: smaller groups of Greater White-fronted and Greylag Geese , numerous Mute Swans and Mallards , plus Eurasian Teals , Gadwalls , Common Pochards , a few Ferruginous and Tufted Ducks , Common Goldeneyes and several Smews. New Zealand Fur-seals are the most common pinniped found in New Zealand. The reason Alan had come was to film another endemic, a critically endangered species, the Orange-fronted Parakeet.

The young birds had looked like they were ready to fledge, the season is getting late and they looked ready to leave.
