Horrible Hybrids

10,000 Birds

On BirdTrack, the British equivalent of e-Bird, the list of birds provided does allow for Tufted Duck x Ferruginous Duck to be recorded, but not Tufted Duck x Pochard. However, that’s exactly what I guessed the duck swimming in front of me had to be. My hunch was Tufted Duck x Pochard.

Tremendous Torrent Ducks

10,000 Birds

Torrent Ducks are the thrill-seekers of the avian world. Very few birds – or animals for that matter – would plunge head-first into the churning cauldrons of some of South America’s most treacherous rivers. Seeing only the male or female really doesn’t cut it as these birds are the epitome of sexual dimorphism.

Birding the Eshowe area, South Africa

10,000 Birds

As usual, my experience with such boardwalks was somewhat underwhelming, as was Eshowe as a whole, but there were still a few birds worth mentioning at the forest and in the area surrounding Eshowe. These two Hadada Ibis are reenacting the mirror scene from “Duck soup” (sort of). It must be frustrating.

Heading Out for the First Day of the Great Backyard Bird Count

10,000 Birds

The Great Backyard Bird Count kicked off yesterday, and will continue throughout the weekend before ending on the 15th. The idea is simple: birders from around the world count birds at least one time for at least fifteen minutes, and submit their data through eBird or the Merlin Bird ID app. The highlights? A fine start to GBBC!

Vagrancy in Birds: A Book Review

10,000 Birds

Thank you, goddess of birding luck and text group people).* My inner self felt stuck in an area between disbelief and total joy and the voices near me were echoing this state of mind: “Oh My God,” “I never thought I would see this bird,” “Look at that bill!” “How did that bird get here?”

African Pygmy Geese – Diminutive Ducks

10,000 Birds

When I read somewhere that Pygmy Geese were not actually geese at all I started doing some research. I discovered that there are actually a fair number of ducks and other waterfowl that are wrongly called geese. So any birds that don’t belong to these genera can be considered either ducks or swans or something else.

Chronic Exposure in Colorado

10,000 Birds

Not only did my research show a lot of promising sites to visit, but I also have two good birding friends in the region, Laura and Brad. I also have to mention the fact that these pictures are mainly of birds I did not see, but there’s nothing in the rules of 10,000 Birds forbidding that. My sincere apologies.
