An article in today's Seattle Times about Woodland Park Zoo's attempts over the last 20 years to breed elephants. Very controversial with organizations such as In Defense of Animals, PETA and the Northwest Animal Rights Network. They say it's cruel. The zoo claims it's to preserve the species.

Just yesterday I learned that the Barn Owl ( Tyto alba ) is the only breeding bird found in New York that has been documented nesting in every month of the year. This bit of trivia was given in an article in my local bird club’s monthly newsletter about the ongoing breeding bird atlas in New York State.

According to a December 1970 article in the New York Times , there was a flock of 9 to 12 birds in Fort Tilden. One article states that by the end of the 1960′s, over 16,000 Monk Parakeets a year were being imported into the U.S.**. Some articles speculate that the nests offer protection against the cold. 16, 1970, p.51.

The story of the cahow, a “Lazurus species” that was thought to be extinct for over 300 years and then discovered to be breeding on a tiny remote island in Bermuda, is part of modern birding legend. In 1951, there were 18 breeding pairs of cahows discovered on three tiny islands. This is a good read, informative and engaging.
