I remember the guide on my first Kenyan birding safari remarking that “birding groups always see far more mammals than those who come just to see animals. On my 21-day Kenyan safaris we reckoned to find around 600 species of birds and around 60 mammals, both impressive totals. Why not the stoat family or the badger family?)

High up at almost 4500 meters, some Alpine Accentors were posing in the sunshine, justifying the description in the HBW as “large, attractive accentor” (though eBird seems to disagree, instead characterizing the species as a “stocky, stout, and unobtrusive bird”). I side with the HBW on this issue. So undignified.

Abundant animals like grasshoppers are always abundant for a reason. The whole reason I was exploring this area can be traced to a report of multiple sightings of small groups of the migratory Yellow-billed Cuckoo. This species is distinctly South American and does not share the same trajectory as the Yellow-billed Cuckoos.

Apparently, Longcanggou is a great place to see a variety of parrotbill species. I can only partly confirm this, with my sightings restricted to two species. Like many of the largest species within bird families, the Great Parrotbill looks somewhat plain, at least in the weather I encountered it. Fortunately, they are not.
