So there was no traffic, no noise, and each day we awoke to the drama of the creatures who lived right outside our door. I've written about the much-maligned Muscovy ducks before , and at our old house this time of year I was usually inundated with rescue situations and of course my patio often had images like this. And a dead end.

I hope this is the right sub to ask this. A few weeks ago a wild duck decided to build her nest on the flat roof below my window, now two of the babies hatched so far with the rest on the way. flat roof momma duck just flew, but can the chicks jump from this height and be unharmed? Do i just let the duck figure it out herself?

Driving slowly along the track towards the levee separating this area from the Danube backwaters, a largish marten-like animal once ran across the track. Personally I wasn’t happy, but I do not live there and do not have a septic tank in my backyard, so I felt that I had no right to complain.

When I reached the levee earlier that morning, I met an elderly hunter from whom I learned that there was an ongoing duck and pheasant hunt, but no one was shooting from, nor towards the embankment, hence I should be safe there.

Some wild Grey Ducks from the Northern Territory ( GDW45 Creative Commons ). By the 1970s the Mallards were beginning to rule the roost.

Lesser Whistling Ducks are “not threatened by hunting as they are not considered good to eat” ( Wikipedia ). Lucky ducks. If you take a feral pigeon, bleach it and then batik it using the right colors, the result might be a Pink-necked Green Pigeon (1). Plus hopefully, you will be arrested for mistreating animals.

Apparently, there are no Lesser Scaup around here, so even I can be fairly confident to get this species identification right. Japanese T**s have their own claim to fame – they are the first wild animal species with experimental evidence for compositional syntax. Somehow, for this bird it is ok. They also look fairly cute.

The shallows at its lower end are full of Tufted Ducks (500) and Common Pochards (350), Great Cormorants (50), all of them dissolving in the mist hanging low over water and hiding further rafts. A few dozen Common Goldeneyes and several Smews are among them but it takes a scope to locate these diminutive ducks.

Actually, when I started to bird, my second ever duck, after the Mallard, was a Ruddy Shelduck! Soon, I found three large ducks on the water, but as soon as I come closer, they took flight, like proper wild ducks. Well, one reason might be – this animal is not only endangered, but even rarer than the Tiger!

The water was warm and the ducks floated off as I approached! Thankfully they only prey on insects, because we have our fair share of dangerous animals in Australia without adding plants as a threat to our lives!! Ephemeral lakes have had some Water Lilies this year, which have been absent when they have not filled up in other years.

These waste water treatment plants offer the perfect environment to bird-life due to the fact that water is constantly available and is fenced for further protection from feral animals. I might have to add the Dallas airport staff to the list of things Buffon was right about. Late summer 2023 the lakes and ponds had been empty, presumably because the ducks and geese were moulting. No coyotes in sight right now, the Great Horned Owls are off in the cottonwoods closer to the river. Also ferrets are curious animals, explorers, willing to take risks; they’ve had to be. It is much easier to get up closer to a bird, point the scope past a branch or to duck down low to get a head shot which is isolated against the background. But of course I also like taking images of other animals when the opportunity presents it self. Dragonflies, for example, are lots of fun and so are butterflies.
