Torrent Ducks are the thrill-seekers of the avian world. Very few birds – or animals for that matter – would plunge head-first into the churning cauldrons of some of South America’s most treacherous rivers. We initially only found a male Torrent Duck and later on, only a female. And did they put on a show!

Yesterday I saw two small ducklings in a group of ducks and geese, but their mom didn’t seem to be around them or attentive. Can someone explain a bit more about duck behavior with their babies? Are ducklings generally safe with other ducks that aren’t their parents?

What I am getting at here is that I have seen lots and lots of Ruddy Ducks at Jamaica Bay but never one that looked like this particular individual. She was essentially cream-colored, much lighter than the typical female Ruddy Duck. Anyway, enjoy the images and keep an eye out for odd ducks! Get yours today! Thanks, Corey!
