The female isn’t quite so unreal but is still a cool little bird in her own right. Plumaged like various other small female hummingbirds from North America, the lady Snowcap is pale gray below, pale glittering green above, and with a tail that flashes bits of white.

Some of those migrants don’t have far to go but the majority of species are winging their way in from Mexico, Central America, and South America. Several come to Costa Rica and a lot of those are, right at this moment, on the move. More should be moving through very soon, mostly on the Caribbean slope.

If a large, powerful bird of prey capable of terrorizing a Wild Turkey comes to mind, that may be a fair definition of a hawk-eagle. Oh, and yes, some do also kill our local “turkey”, the Great Curassow. Oh, and yes, some do also kill our local “turkey”, the Great Curassow. This curassow is great.

Eastern Bluebirds called from the branches above my head, while Ruby-crowned Kinglets buzzed in the holly bush a few yards to my right. Turkey Vultures swirled overhead, Red-shouldered Hawks looked for prey from a nearby dead trunk, and Northern Cardinals, Northern Mockingbirds , and Brown-headed Nuthatches made occasional appearances.

Costa Rica is situated right between two oceans. The pair of seas are close enough for the occasional adventurous frigatebird to just soar way up and right over to the other salty basin. Nothing like watching kettle after kettle of Turkey Vultures , and Broad-winged and Swainson’s Hawks pass overhead for hours.

California Quail are familiar birds to West Coast birders of North America, and Kiwis too now. Brush-tailed Possums were brought from Australia to help start a fur industry.

Kites aren’t the only birds in the air here; we saw all kinds of flycatchers, thrushes, swallows, parrots, and—-making us Americans feel right at home—- Red-winged Blackbirds and Great-tailed Grackles. Don’t ignore those vultures though, as flocks of those familiar Black and Turkey Vultures usually hide some Lesser Yellow-headed Vultures.

I went on to tell him that I’d seen these birds in Central America but that I needed to see them in the US too.
