Set in an abandoned oil refinery where wildlife is slowly regaining control save for the desperate attempts of golfers to retain all eighteen holes, industrial ghosts loom over rolling freshwater lakes bordered by fifty foot tall trees. The subtle white edging to the gape of this bird indicates it is near breeding time.

The usual way to find an owl would be to listen to its territorial call in the breeding season (to listen and not to lure it – I oppose the playback ), but this species is even less vocal than most other owls. The bird tolerated us for perhaps a dozen seconds before it majestically took off. Absolutely thrilled!

Especially the bird breeding season, which passes by at the blink of an eye. Two weeks in July though eats through prime birding time up here. But I just haven’t seen birds like normal, although a large part of that has been effort. Rough-legged Hawks are another bird that are almost guaranteed.

There are two species in the Old World woodpecker genus that sounds like birds that birders would never be able to see. They are literal jinx birds in that their genus name is “ Jynx.” Neither even makes their own nesting cavities; they use the abandoned holes of other woodpeckers.

For Global Big Day on May 14th, we decided we’d try our hand at birding as much of the island as possible. One of the first birds we actually got a proper visual on was a true rainforest specialty, impossible elsewhere: this gorgeous adult male White-tailed Sabrewing ! It appeared that many of the birds that we had seen on earlier visits this year had abandoned the area due to the huge expanse of water. It is highly likely that the Glossy Ibis will have a significant breeding colony close by, not dissimilar to 2017. Cones marking the highway damage. It really can be too wet for ducks!

The Gray-crowned Rosy Finch , when she abandons her breeding grounds, prefers to forage on the ground, similar to (and sometimes in company with) Snow Buntings, Horned Larks , and Longspurs. They are high-altitude birds, and will only come as far down the slopes as they are forced to by the weather. I know what could happen.
