So my favorites for 2019 includes a good number of birds that are rather common elsewhere, but were firsts for me. Plus a few truly difficult species. Mandarin Ducks, Munich, Germany. Sure, it is an introduced species in Germany. And they aren’t nearly as famous as the vagrant/escaped Mandarin Duck of Central Park.

Once I was fully vaccinated and air travel became an option, I looked for a location for my first birding trip since 2019. On eBird, Horicon NWR has nearly 300 species observed, more than 18,000 checklists, and 13 hotspots. of Horicon NWR was purchased with MBCF funds ( i.e., Duck Stamp funds). Thus, I limited my options.

Mabamba Swamp is where Corey and I spotted our first Shoebill in the company of an international delegation attending the 2019 African Bird Expo. Having finally seen this iconic species, I can assure you that the experience wildly exceeds expectations.

I knew that Michoacan’s rainfall during the 2019 summer rainy season had been quite poor. The normally-shallower west side attracts all sorts of ducks and shorebirds; the east side usually offers only American Coots and Clark’s Grebes.) The birdlife here is wonderful, a ten-night safari should give you over 200 species, (2018 & 2019 both gave us 242!). Would it still be deep enough for the ducks that prefer that half? Would there be enough deep water to see Ruddy Ducks and Clark’s Grebes ? The western half still has enough water for some shorebirds, but the thousands of ducks I would usually see now number in the dozens. But, as always, new sites bring new species.

On Christmas Day we did a bird list around Broome and although we also found over one hundred species on both that day and on New Year’s Day the lists were quite different. Despite observing Eastern Ospreys , Brahminy Kites and Red-winged Parrots on a regular basis around Broome all three bird species eluded us on Christmas Day!

We were able to add a few new birds to the 2019 Year List and had a good day out. We checked out the Derby Airport and there were Masked Lapwings there as usual and several other bird species at a small wetland that had formed from recent rain. Around fifty bird species were observed between 11:15am and 12:30pm.
