Nisqually Wildlife Refuge. This wonderful piece of birding real estate can be found 8 miles east of Olympia, and an hour’s drive south of Seattle Washington, right along the I-5 corridor. There were Song Sparrows, Spotted Towhees, American Robins , and of course the ever popular Yellow-rumped Warbler.

The Cerro de Punhuato (poon-WA-toe) nature reserve, officially denominated a biological garden, is right on the northeastern edge of Morelia’s urban zone. “Respect this area; it is the home of wildlife. Entry with your pet is forbidden: no dogs; they scare wildlife. A hand-painted sign told not to enter with a dog.

Fish & Wildlife Service expects sea levels to rise due to global warming, swamping beaches on which Snowy Plovers currently nest, it is good news that the number of beaches proposed for protection as Snowy Plover nesting habitat has doubled. Fish & Wildlife comes in response to a lawsuit brought by the Center for Biological Diversity.

The first surprise came, as we were driving into town, and not one, but two Scissor-tailed Flycatchers flew right across the road in front of us. This Coopers Hawk flew right up to the roof on a flood control booth, and looked at me like “ What are you doing out here” and promptly flew away. This one flew right over my head.

I stitched away as I watched the Red-bellied Woodpecker scatter the smaller Chipping Sparrows and Carolina Chickadees as it glided down for a few seed morsels. Eastern Bluebirds called from the branches above my head, while Ruby-crowned Kinglets buzzed in the holly bush a few yards to my right. The emphasis was on discovery.

The nature reserve is really well managed by the Yorkshire Wildlife Trust with numerous hides and wheelchair access to much of the reserve. The nature reserve is constantly evolving and although part of it is a former sand quarry it has been carefully developed to encourage wildlife. Well done Yorkshire Wildlife Trust!

The 2012 event was held at Minnesota Valley National Wildlife Refuge. The conference timed nicely with sparrow migration and everyone was anxious to get views of reported Nelson’s Sparrows that were obligingly hanging out in some mud along a beaver pond. It’s a pleasant way to spend and hour on the refuge.

Cabanis’s Ground-Sparrow. The name change of a small brown bird, a sparrow, is exciting. Split from birds in northern Central America (the White-faced Ground-Sparrow ), the Cabanis’s becomes a very special bird. Not every list has Great Tinamou on it. Ocassional robins, sparrows, crows. the last part is raptor behavior but I can't imagine what kind of bird would be small enough to choose this space when there's 300 yds of chain link fence right there, and I've yet to see a dead squirrel, rabbit or chipmunk. I'm not out in the country either (despite the wildlife.)
