Being a westerner — raised in California, and now living in western Mexico — I was perhaps most excited about the migratory birds that breed in eastern North America. This was only my fourth encounter with the species (all on the east side). Although, truth be told, this species does seem to be a rarity in Tabasco.)

The 1st edition from 1999 was a complete revolution in just about everything, but predominantly the quality and realism of illustrations, showing what a field guide could be and seriously raising the threshold for other publishers. Left – 2nd edition, right – 3rd edition So, not much has changed since the 2nd edition?

Birding Singapore

For once, eBird gives a good description of the Asian Glossy Starling, calling it a “Fierce-looking, large songbird” As are humans, this species is fairly urbanized – it “sometimes enters urban areas to roost, e.g. in Singapore” (HBW). “Odd, me?” But the joke simply does not work then).

Photos courtesy of Mosetlha Bush Camp A dusty-red road leads me through Marico bushveld deeper into the 750 square kilometers large wilderness of the Madikwe Game Reserve – the 4th largest reserve in South Africa, home to 350 bird and 66 mammal species, some 4 hours’ drive from Johannesburg. They raise their trunks, sniffing the air.

The existing villagers joined with the newcomers organizing a whip-round to raise money in the hope of buying it. The real upside is that it is right by my house and the Tawny Owls occasionally stray into my oak tree at night. Blue T**s and Great T**s abound as do Greater Spotted Woodpeckers.

Participating in My First “Normal” Birdathon

A life bird for me, and another species for my Audubon Florida Birdathon checklist. Birdathons are typically used by state programs and chapters to raise critical funding for conservation and research programs. Joseph Peninsula State Park, I added terns and shorebirds, ending the day with 50 species in total. An Orchard Oriole!

Rancho Naturalista Lodge, Costa Rica, or in the Land of Coffee and Chocolate

Next stops offered White-crowned Parrot and Barred Parakeets , Chestnut-sided and Canada Warblers , Collared Aracari , half a dozen Purple-throated Fruitcrows … I heard a strong double-nock of a huge Pale-billed Woodpecker , but the bird didn’t present itself to our eyes. Next goal: 1100 species, to cover about 10% of the total.
