As you enter Lassen Volcanic National Park’s northern entrance the first thing you see along the right side of the road is Manzanita Lake with Mount Lassen in the background. White-headed Woodpecker Male. Yah, another western species. The female White-headed Woodpecker looks like the male without the red occipital patch.

Red-cockaded Woodpecker. It also meant Red-cockaded Woodpeckers could be nearby. Red-cockaded Woodpeckers are rare. As a result of development and loss of their habitat, their populations have vastly declined , and they have been listed as a federally Endangered Species. I had to agree.

Although an attractive bird, this species was not of particular interest to me as I’ve seen it countless times when I lived in South Africa (and is not present there at this time of year anyway), but the area has much more on offer. As the rice paddies near Kota Kinabalu described in an earlier post , Tanjung Aru beach is not really a major birding spot in its own right. For once, eBird gives a good description of the Asian Glossy Starling, calling it a “Fierce-looking, large songbird” As are humans, this species is fairly urbanized – it “sometimes enters urban areas to roost, e.g. in Singapore” (HBW). “Odd, me?” But the joke simply does not work then).

Hongbenghe is a very small village in Yunnan, right next to the border with Myanmar. I saw two Pitta species at Hongbenghe, both among the slightly less glamourous among the pitta family: The Blue-naped Pitta … … and the closely related Rusty-naped Pitta. This is how it looks like: Or at sunset: A species I did not come for from Shanghai is the Black-crowned Night Heron. Its species name graydoni is in honor of Philip Newenham Graydon (1864-1940), a British planter in Sabah. Why that makes Mr. Graydon worthy of having a bird species named after him is a mystery to me.

Even photos of the rarest of birds can be found, even heart-wrenching images of bird species that are no longer with us. The fleeting photo of an Ivory-billed Woodpecker tugs at and flies away with a piece of the heart, that final image of a Slender-billed Curlew is difficult to look at, it’s a stab deep inside.

I can hear a Great Spotted Woodpecker calling. That is the trickiest moment for him: what if there’s a bear right next to the dirt track? There are more than 1100 plant species, the most valuable being the 76 endemics. Other species include Roe Deer (also spotted), Wildcat , European Pine Marten and Otter.

Next stops offered White-crowned Parrot and Barred Parakeets , Chestnut-sided and Canada Warblers , Collared Aracari , half a dozen Purple-throated Fruitcrows … I heard a strong double-nock of a huge Pale-billed Woodpecker , but the bird didn’t present itself to our eyes. Next goal: 1100 species, to cover about 10% of the total.

Within 140 ac / 60 ha of Rancho Naturalista’s Reserve, there are 500 bird species – or 55% of the nation’s total! Add Common Tody-Flycatcher and several Hoffmann’s Woodpeckers and Brown-hooded Parrots to that picture, among many others. Located within its private premontane forest reserve at 3000 ft / 900 m a.s.l.

For some reason that is hard for me to fathom, there is no such bird as a Cape Woodpecker. In fact, this is probably a species that has substantially expanded its original range through the pet shop route and the resulting escapees. Today, with assistance from the Tucson Audubon Society, this world-famous destination is “The Place” to go for not only rare hummingbirds, but dozens of other species as well. In a check of the eBird hotspot list for Santa Rita Lodge, it shows a life list there of 170 species, and approaching 13,000 check lists submitted. Most days you will get a good look at the Arizona Woodpecker. I was quiet surprised to see this male Western Tanager show up right at dark for a quick drink of water.
