Black-backed Woodpeckers and Forest Fires in California and the West

As I got out of my car, about fifty feet from Manzanita Lake, I heard the loud drumming of a woodpecker. I didn’t know what species of woodpecker it was, but I knew it was just in the clearing on the other side of the road. Click on photos for full sized images.

This is how it looks like: Or at sunset: A species I did not come for from Shanghai is the Black-crowned Night Heron. They look crap but presumably offer some protection for the chicks, though not from each other (see the murderous activities within the nests in my previous post ). Yes, we have them in Shanghai as well.

Woodland for sale

After a lot of backing and forthing, the vendor accepted our offer and the wood is to become a trust to be protected in perpetuity. There will probably be environmental studies and enhancements to encourage wildlife. Blue T**s and Great T**s abound as do Greater Spotted Woodpeckers. Feeder stations! Just try and stop me!
