This was the first geological site protected in the Djerdap area, formed along a fault by incision of the Boljetinska River into the sedimentary rocks. Other species include Grey Wagtail and Marsh Tit. is known as the northernmost range of holly ( Ilex aquifolium ), a relict evergreen species, in Serbia and the only site in Djerdap.

How many species have I observed this year? Arctic Loon), Lesser Black-backed Gull , Middle Spotted Woodpecker and Goldcrest should easily make 190, although the pecker is a bit uncertain. And immediately, I hear a woodpecker looking for food. The largest of European peckers – the uncommon Black Woodpecker !

I saw two Pitta species at Hongbenghe, both among the slightly less glamourous among the pitta family: The Blue-naped Pitta … … and the closely related Rusty-naped Pitta. It seems that this is another species for which the standard phrase of scientists anywhere, “more research needed”, applies.

In birding circles, Costa Rica is better known for protected areas, quetzal tours, and glittering displays of hummingbirds than the things that fly in urban spots. Blue Jays and Northern Cardinals , Downy Woodpeckers. Brown Jays also flutter by and those are just a few of the species that still occur. That makes sense.

The majority are clearly Mallards , followed by Garganeys , with one and possibly more Green-winged Teals , also Ferruginous Ducks … Surprises among them are one Common Shelduck , a species that most likely breeds some 15 mi from here (and my first shelduck of the year) and an even greater surprise: two Eurasian Wigeons.

According to eBird , just over 200 species have been observed at the refuge and just under 1,000 checklists have been submitted. Although the refuge was established in 1964 in part to protect crane habitat, a pair did not return until 1972, and the first nests were observed in 1976. By early July, there was not even the hint of a lake.

The cactus are not the only things down here that are protected in this manner. Members of the genus Pachycereus , there are a couple of species which are quite prevalent here on the southern Baja. Once the fruit is ripe, it becomes a primary source for many species. First the Gila Woodpecker. Then the White-winged Doves.

Casa dowii is located in Cartago Province, along the Panamerican Highway in the Navarro Sombrero Protected Area that buffers Tapanti and Los Quetzales National Parks. I had never seen this species of kite before, but Guhin explained that they often hunted in the natural acres of the reserve. The ES NERR is a world-renowned biodiversity hotspot, drawing birders from around the country and around the globe, all happy to see as many of the over 200 species recorded here as possible. The bulk of the boats will stop just before making this turn, in the little protected bay called Bahia Los Frailes. What most boaters are unaware of is the abundant number of bird species that call this area home, especially during the winter months.
