Penguin: Is their goose cooked? Penguins have already been taking it in the neck in places where shore-line shelves of ice have broken up or moved around in the antarctic. Penguins can be trapped in low areas created by breaking up ice. So far, the Penguins on Ross Island have not done very well.

And from July through to December one can sit and watch Cape Rockjumpers, whilst a dozen or so Southern Right Whales propel their massive bodies clean out of the water, then belly-flopping with thunderous amounts of spray. Even leopards still live here and occasionally terrorize the African Penguin colony at nearby Betty’s Bay.

If you aren’t the one driving it’s worth keeping an eye out for Southern Right Whales wintering in the bay (the road is rather to twisty to be looking if you’re driving). The village is home to a seabird colony that’s a tourist destination, another African Penguin colony that’s also a cormorant colony.

Though I was out on the jetty enjoying the brisk breeze and the sound and smell of the ocean I was seriously lacking any flying penguins of the north. Then, after about half-an-hour of birding I took a break from scanning the far jetty through my scope and was amazed to notice a Razorbill floating right next to the jetty, nearly at my feet!

We have loved seeing places that few people ever get to see, and learning about the interesting wildlife that lives there. Some of it is quiet funny as well.

The ferry is a very nice powered catamaran, that moves right along at 18-20 knots, but in 3-4 meter seas, that will make for a pretty bumpy ride. This one walked right up to me in the parking lot just as the sun was setting. We got to sit at shore side, and watch them come ashore.
