So much so that the two species are placed within their own family, Chaetopidae. The species is insectivorous and nests amongst the scree and boulders on the steep mountain slopes. A Crowned Cormorant by Adam Riley African Penguin by Adam Riley Rooiels truly is one of my favorite destinations on the planet. And rightly so.

If you aren’t the one driving it’s worth keeping an eye out for Southern Right Whales wintering in the bay (the road is rather to twisty to be looking if you’re driving). The village is home to a seabird colony that’s a tourist destination, another African Penguin colony that’s also a cormorant colony.

Even so, he still knew many species and always yearned to learn about the wildlife he encountered. There were also grouse, the Ruffed Grouse , and like so many other species, it just seemed impossible that I would ever see one. The remaining four species are the most grouse-like of the bunch.

To have a chance to see two species close up without vomiting was something I was looking forward to! Though I was out on the jetty enjoying the brisk breeze and the sound and smell of the ocean I was seriously lacking any flying penguins of the north. The Common Eiders and Black Scoters were nice though.

Spotted Shags are a possibility, and one time I even saw a Little Penguin swimming around right next to the waterfront along which hundreds of people were walking towards the main stadium (it was a few hours away from a World Cup match between South Africa and Australia). But many species are also capable divers.

The ferry is a very nice powered catamaran, that moves right along at 18-20 knots, but in 3-4 meter seas, that will make for a pretty bumpy ride. Imported rats, Short-tailed Weasels, or Stoats as they are know as here, 0possums, and feral cats have caused the extinction of literally dozens of bird species here in New Zealand.

Marlborough Sounds has a pretty special endemic, the King Shag , a species that isn’t just endemic to New Zealand but endemic to just the Sounds. It is my best bird because it is just such an incredible species, and looking at it made me realize that I had temporarily stopped to fully appreciate birds during the stressful last few years. This year I watched them from the day they arrived , until two chicks successfully hatched, the northernmost breeding record for the species.

Early July is right in the middle of month-and-a-half where I have seen the Sinaloa Martin. (I Assuming that several of the observers involved had made multiple observations, that probably represents only around one hundred people having ever reported this species, even though it breeds in a country bordering the United States.

It also managed to get fern leaves right. Anyway, more important is the lovely Hiohio or Yellow-eyed Penguin. This lovely species was recently discovered to be a recent arrival to the mainland of New Zealand. It’s an awesome species that is easily seen if you are ever in Dunedin.

Whoever is in charge of names in the area had abandoned an unwise relationship with compound names ((meaning Redwinged Starlings were Red-winged Starlings again) and seemed to have shifted the names of lots of species around in the hopes of aligning them with the IOC (goodbye louries). Right next to the world famous Opera House is the the Sydney Botanical Gardens, a good place to see Sulphur-crested Cockatoos , Banded Rails and large roosting groups of Grey-headed Flying-foxes. And it is certainly possible to see others with luck and a trip to the right spot. The city is a very green one.
