Dirt hawking is a form of falconry that involves hunting rabbits and other small game with Harris Hawks (other hawk species also qualify). One of the primary reasons that these hawks make such excellent falconry birds is because they are one of only two raptor species (the other is the Galapagos Hawk ) that hunt cooperatively.

Seaside Sparrows were singing on both sides and occasionally popped up to give us a view before diving deep back into the Spartina grass, hopefully getting ready to nest. Seaside Sparrow. Of course, Lema Ranch is one of the locations of my bluebird trails, so I found several Western Bluebirds , including this female intensely hunting ground dwelling insects. There were Black Phoebes hawking insects around the ponds … Ruby-crowned Kinglets foraging in the trees… and a male Bushtit collecting nesting material.

I was able to find the Common Redpoll among the flock of Lesser Goldfinches and Savannah Sparrows. I even got a halfway decent photo of it before heading a few miles away to see the American Tree Sparrow and Red-naped Sapsucker. Personally, I’m waiting for the irruption of Snowy Owls to reach northern California!

Other weavers include the Grey-capped Social Weaver which is the size of a little sparrow. The Red-headed Weaver hunting silently in the treetops. My second twitch, during the winter of 2011, was also in the area of McArthur where an American Tree Sparrow ( Spizella arborea ) was spotted during a Christmas Bird Count. I make this statement with this addendum; I would not post the location of a species that could be targeted during hunting season.

Walking along a dirt track next to a prairie, my friend and I were on the look-out for different sparrow species when a large bird suddenly darted into the clearing. Their impressive speed is used for hunting, and roadrunners will eat almost anything that moves. Not so much, as the above photo demonstrates.

My Dark-eyed Juncos are trilling in preparation to retreat to quieter breeding grounds, the Black-Capped Chickadees sing their two notes, and the Song Sparrows absolutely will not shut up. Attempts to curb goose populations by increasing bag limits and lengthening hunting seasons have, unsurprisingly, failed.

The most likely bird would be Fulvous Whistling-Duck which I tried for and dipped on last year thanks to the refuge that was good for them being closed for hunting on the day that I made the attempt.

I looked over to see this beautiful male hunting from a perch directly across the bridge from me. As I was getting back to my car, I saw a flutter of sparrows escape from a berry bush and this Black Phoebe ( Sayornis nigricans ) flew to a nearby treetop and flicked its tail.
