This year, a few months after my fortieth birthday, when I saw a Blue Jay in West Glacier Montana I felt only a small bit of surprise – it was an uncommon bird but no longer really extralimital as a wintering species. There’s a certain suburbanization of the natural as well as the human world.

These turkey-sized birds, named for their raucous calls, can muster an impressive level of volume. I had never birded this way before, and can confirm that what I had heard is true: Birds are much more tolerant of human presence when those humans are on a boat! Human access is very limited to the lake, with very few hiking trails around the lake, mostly to the south area, which provides good viewing points to much of the lake. Certainly what I would consider to be an under birded area, eBird.com lists 232 species on 397 total check lists. Boats are allowed, but no gas motors can be used.

The decades of storage in a museum came after it was regarded as an extinct species. While I had heard Yellow Rails in North Dakota in 2010, to see this Ohio Review Species fly, not once but twice, right in front of me was an incredible experience. The nest was found in a gated community and the human residents were gracious enough to let a small number of birders in for a day to marvel at these gorgeous birds.
