Anything posing a risk to their nests or young will be met by swift action with parent birds dive-bombing any potential threat and raising such a noise as to make the predator choose an easier option. Then I saw the reason for their protective behaviour. If only it were so easy for humans to strike such a well balanced policy.

You can notice in the above images how the Leopard uses her eye-lids as hoods to protect her sensitive eyes from the bright sun as she sprinted towards us. Sitting down, she raised this leg and pulled them out using her teeth, after a few more paces, she then raised her front right leg and pulled out another thorn!

This summer Lisa raised three orphaned Common Ravens. They were not aware of wildlife laws, and thought they could raise and release them. We decided to raise them, and hoped they would wild up quickly if we followed the protocol for avoiding imprinting. She has a captive-bred education bird named Xena, a Eurasian Eagle Owl.

It is estimated that due to conflicts with humans, the bushmeat and body parts trade, disease and habitat destruction, large mammals in Africa may be extinct by the end of this century. Second, reading about birds courting and parenting brings out the tendency to identify, which leads directly to anthropomorphism, the tendency to assign birds human emotions and thoughts.
