This year is the eighteenth year since we discovered our first Pied Oystercatcher nest on Cable Beach in Broome and it didn’t take us long to realise that they are not at all successful at raising young due to egg and chick predation. He last raised a chick successfully in 2016 and has nested in this area since 2008.

Pheasant Coucals are also a member of the cuckoo family, but are unique because they do actually raise their own young. All other cuckoos lay their eggs in other birds’ nests and let them raise them. Pallid Cuckoo. Their flight through the trees was not dissimilar to a small bird of prey.

Eventually, I found the lone whooping crane present at the refuge by its call. Letters from Eden (Houghton Mifflin, 2006) will soon be followed by a memoir about the birds she has raised, healed, studied and followed throughout her life. On August 20th we entered the bird hide at about 10am and were noting the birds present and six crocodiles on the far bank when suddenly a large crocodile grabbed one of the Little Black Cormorants that was feeding in a small group in the middle of the billabong. Before I could even get my camera ready it was gone.
