First Greylag Geese , Gadwall , both Caspian and Yellow-legged Gulls appear, together with dozens of Pygmy Cormorants and one Eurasian Sparrowhawk. It is an important migration stopover site and wintering area that attracts the largest congregations of waterbirds anywhere in the country, up to 80,000 during cold spells – half of them geese.

A Great Egret , a few Pygmy Cormorants and, by the middle of the Danube, about a hundred Greylag Geese. Two hundred yards further, the first Common Goldeneye and Smew started to appear and, while counting Smew and geese, a Great Bittern took flight from one stand of reeds to another, right in front of us.

At the snowy Danube riverbank, we are waiting for geese to come to their roost inside the mostly submerged island. A shot or two coming from the opposite bank, but they do not sound like geese shooting – more like boar hunting. warns me of two locally rare Bean Geese. Yeah, right. A goose hunt sounds like a WWII battle.

Were we to ascribe to weekends the taxonomy of birds, our days would likely resemble our lists: for every resplendent songbird or wild raptor would be ten ordinary gulls or pigeons, interesting in their own rights but hardly worth raving about. Well, it took about ten minutes to find out, as I was sitting in the RV, right at water’s edge, photographing a lovely pair of Rufus-banded Honeyeaters , when a small, 2-meter-long Crocodile came rushing up out of the water, right at my door! European Robin had to be on the list, because it says everything about an English Winter and what a few of you are no doubt experiencing right now! Canada Geese , Greylag Geese and Eurasian Wigeon. A month ago I was in the Iron Gates National Park in eastern Serbia, where one Black Woodpecker flew across the road, right in front of us (proving it is an extant taxon). Birds here included geese, Greater White-fronted and Greylags and, among 25,000 of these, four rare and stunningly handsome Red-breasted Geese.

The open plains are now busy with young Magpie Geese and numerous other waterbirds and the Sharp-tailed Sandpipers are busy feeding up before migration. There is a huge population of Red-collared Lorikeets in Palmerston and they roost right in the city centre at night and cause quite a commotion as they all come in and roost. The first part of the week, we parked the RV at a campground right on the water, of Dog Lake, 20 miles southwest of Lakeview, Oregon. Right after getting the anchor set, what to my eyes should I see, but several P urple Martins flying above the boat! A pair Bald Eagles were doing fly-bys over our heads , and there were Belted Kingfishers, Canada Geese , A pair of Mallards, and three Great Blue Herons.
