The Amusing Case of the Gulf Breeze Zoo Canada Geese

On large islands shaded with multiple trees, a family of orangutans and another of gorillas lounged in the green grass. But the geese didn’t care, going about their business surrounded by dozens of species from around the globe. The Canada Geese (on the right side) show no fear. Where were the babies?

However – and I am not saying this out of misplaced national pride – there is one bird in the Netherlands that proves Jefferson wrong and Buffon right: the White-tailed Eagle (or Sea Eagle ). So yes, I needed to see this beast, this flying door, this scourge of all things’ geese, this modern Roc. It’s the only Dutch eagle.

Masked Lapwings breeding at Derby airport

The open plains are now busy with young Magpie Geese and numerous other waterbirds and the Sharp-tailed Sandpipers are busy feeding up before migration. From our vantage point in the car the Masked Lapwing stayed sitting normally on the right hand side of the road as we went into the airport grounds. Masked Lapwing protecting a nest.

Marlow Lagoon

Marlow Lagoon is an excellent place to observe the Kingfisher family and often I will see a Sacred Kingfisher sitting on the power line near the entrance. There is a huge population of Red-collared Lorikeets in Palmerston and they roost right in the city centre at night and cause quite a commotion as they all come in and roost.

The last weekend of January found me in the frosty Pacific Northwest, meeting some long over due work and family obligations. This wonderful piece of birding real estate can be found 8 miles east of Olympia, and an hour’s drive south of Seattle Washington, right along the I-5 corridor. Nisqually Wildlife Refuge.

Australian Painted Snipe breeding near Broome

Magpie Geese were breeding close to the main highway south of Broome and so were the Whiskered Terns , White-winged Black Terns , Purple Swamphens , Comb-crested Jacanas , Wandering Whistling Ducks and Plumed Whistling Ducks. Two birds on the right and one on the left-note the bills! Four eggs in the Australian Painted Snipe nest.

Week 23: The advenure continues, Stateside

In the winter this place is alive with thousand of ducks and geese. Today, I saw a handful of Mallards , two Common Mergansers, and a Wood Duck Family. It ran right out to greet me, and then ran all around me, checking out the cool smells on my tripod legs. Here are a couple of the babies that have wandered off from mom.
