As the local birds get into breeding mode, some others take advantage of the nesting to feed broods of their own. It’s a good day to be outside with binoculars.

Hearing Winter Wrens singing right next to the trail while a distant Hermit Thrush sang its lovely, lonely song. In one of the few areas with a decent amount of open water I was surprised to see Canada Geese with young. Shows what I know about when birds breed. That was a pleasant surprise! Tawny Frogmouths are often an accidental sighting when you are looking for other birds in trees and something just does not look quite right about the shape of the tree. They breed after rain events and this was exactly the situation once again. Tawny Frogmouth nest with chick.

Straight off the bat we found a Little Grebe and a small flock of distant Cotton Pygmy-geese ! A target bird was next, the Pheasant-tailed Jacana, which was sadly not in breeding plumage but was still attractive. If this kind of mess is what birders call a gull is it hardly surprising laypeople just call them seagulls?).

New Zealand had, once upon a time, some fairly spectacular game birds, including massive flightless geese, massive flightles rails, and really enormous moa. Brown Pelicans , and the northernmost Brown Booby breeding colony on this side of the Pacific. Other birds with webbed feet, including ducks and geese, have only three webbed toes; the hallux (which in birds is usually the “hind toe&# and in humans, the “big toe&# ) is free. Wicked, right? We were at Big John’s pond and a red tailed hawk came out of nowhere and we thought he was going to fly right into the blind. I had a beautifull view on 5 horned grebe here (one in breeding plumage), in Ann Arbor Michigan, for the 3 seconds it lasted, until I heard a huge “CRRACK&# , and I fell through the ice.

Not only have the birds arrived from other areas of Australia to breed, but many other creatures have been visible for those of us that are prepared to go bush-walking in extreme heat. This will change over time of course and once it rains again you would need to consider if you had the right vehicle to access the area. Dragonflies photobombing on the right as we approach. You have to look carefully, because often there are Australasian Grebes and Green Pygmy-Geese amongst the ducks and lilies.

The most common member of the Grebe species around Broome is the Australasian Grebe- Tachybaptus novaehollandiae and it has taken advantage of our exceptionally good Wet Season early this year and has been breeding very successfully. During breeding season the Australasian Grebe has a very distinct pale yellow patch at the base of the bill.

With the extent of the tall vegetation many species have been able to breed and hide for many months and now they are becoming more visible from the highway. White-necked Heron The Great Egrets , Intermediate Egrets and Little Egrets continue to feed right against the edge of the highway oblivious to the traffic.

Shallows provide an ideal spawning ground for almost 50 fish species and submerged islands breeding ground for more than 100 bird species. Looking at the river, I cannot believe my memories of the same place this January – frozen solid, with just a small opening in the ice – and 26,000 geese in it! We observed some 15 birds here.

Marlgu Billabong looking right from the shelter. There were numerous Magpie Geese and Wandering Whistling-Ducks on the bank with Yellow Chats running among them to drink. One lake has had a lone Australian Pelican in for several weeks and in the last few weeks there has been the arrival of Magpie Geese and numerous Radjah Shelducks. There are several pairs of Green Pygmy-geese in each lake and both Sacred Kingfishers and Forest Kingfishers are often observed in the nearby trees.

Nonprofit organizations, science, and the best intentions in the world came to the rescue with a captive breeding program, and we now have over 400 Pink Pigeons living in Mauritius, the nearby island of Ile aux Aigrettes, and the zoos hosting the breeding program, including the Bronx Zoo. This striking black and white bird is a common sight in the city, even in the central business district, but it is especially common in the park and breeds on the islands in the lakes here. And, in a tree off to the right in that direction, I noticed a mass of stuff that resembled a Bald Eagle’s nest as much as any mass of stuff ever could, but of course, it was not a bald eagle nest. I live near a highway. All winter, I almost never went west on that road, only east, but a couple of times I did go west.
