At the snowy Danube riverbank, we are waiting for geese to come to their roost inside the mostly submerged island. A shot or two coming from the opposite bank, but they do not sound like geese shooting – more like boar hunting. A goose hunt sounds like a WWII battle. warns me of two locally rare Bean Geese.

Sunday morning would therefore be devoted to hunting down Chen rossii so I could happily check it off of my Queens checklist …either that or it was all just an excuse to go birding on both mornings of a weekend! And the West Pond was covered with Snow Geese , with well over 1,500 birds all around the edges.

A Great Egret , a few Pygmy Cormorants and, by the middle of the Danube, about a hundred Greylag Geese. Two hundred yards further, the first Common Goldeneye and Smew started to appear and, while counting Smew and geese, a Great Bittern took flight from one stand of reeds to another, right in front of us.

You can see right across the water and down into the fields below and across to the hills. The reservoir offered Tufted Ducks , Eurasian Wigeon , Gadwall , Northern Shoveler , Common Pochard , Eurasian Teal , Eurasian Coots , Great Crested Grebes , Little Grebes , Canada Geese and Greylag Geese. These, however, were as wary as lawn geese. One of the rangers at the refuge had some photos showing an injury on the bird’s breast, likely from a gunshot wound as the refuge is a popular site for waterfowl hunting, including hunting the thousands of Tundra Swans in the area. The other birds took some doing to find.
