In the end, I ended up with 9 species, 4 of which were new to the list, the Black-crowned Sparrow Lark, White-checked Bulbo, House Crow , and the Indian Silverbill. This is where Gila Woodpecker and Yellow-breasted Chat meet Squirrel Cuckoo , Bat Falcon , and Black-throated Magpie-Jay. In the mean time, a family group of Black-throated Magpie-Jays were frolicking in the breeze high over the dry valley, showing off their exorbitantly long tail streamers.

The Picidae family was well represented, with both Gila and Ladder-back woodpeckers , as well a pair of Gilded Flickers all spending some time in this oak grove. Here is the Gila Woodpecker. Golden-cheeked Woodpecker , a stunning relative of the more familiar Red-bellied of the eastern United States, proved to be the first Mexican endemic we encountered. However, our attention soon turned to a pair of fantastic Black-chested Sparrows duetting in the thorn-scrub right by the road. Black-chested Sparrow is pretty sharp!

I happen to think the Crested Cara cara is one of the most beautiful birds in the falcon family. They stay here in Mexico despite the heat, and raise their families. This Song Sparrow was in the Seattle area last winter, and got so nicely framed with the local foliage. With that massive bill, it makes for a wonderful profile!

Sibley Birds East covers “nearly 700” birds, up from 650, and Sibley Birds West covers “over 700,” which I’m assuming is more than the first edition count of 703 birds, if for no other reason than that taxonomic splits have give us Ridgeway’s Rail, Bell’s Sparrow and Sagebrush Sparrow. This means that loons are no longer first!

I managed to get some video of this greedy thrasher before a family walked down the path, and you can view it here. A Ladder-backed Woodpecker and then Lesser Goldfinches flew onto the tree next to me as I observed the Roadrunner feeding in an empty lot and a Cactus Wren called from the other side of the lot. I was in birder heaven.

Among our highlights were 5 doves species, a full 9 hummingbirds, 6 herons/egrets, 3 hawks and 2 falcons, 4 woodpeckers, all of 12 Tyrant Flycatchers, 3 vireos, 6 New World Sparrows, 4 New World Orioles in different shades of orange, 16 New World Warblers, 2 tanagers, and 6 grosbeaks and buntings. But still beautiful.
