The conference timed nicely with sparrow migration and everyone was anxious to get views of reported Nelson’s Sparrows that were obligingly hanging out in some mud along a beaver pond. Other birds can viewed there like the above American Pipit, Wilson’s Snipe and White-crowned Sparrows.

Last weekend we had an extended family weekend at a beach house in Wildwood, New Jersey, just north of Cape May. Well, not just at a salt marsh but at the Seaside Sparrows that make their living there, at least in the warmer months. The rooms are floating in a pond and the pond provides a home for a Eurasian Beaver family. but walking to the Schollevaar hide I saw Common Chaffinch, Eurasian Tree Sparrow , European Stonechat , Eurasian Blackbird , Eurasian Blue Tit , Common Kestrel and even a Great Spotted Woodpecker. In spite of the week’s unusual rains, this photo of a Botteri’s Sparrow was marred by Tierra Caliente’s usual intense light levels. Endemic Dusky Hummingbirds may be unusually drab members of their colorful family. Still, both the Tropical and the Western Kingbirds would have been FOY birds.

I’m no expert, but I strongly suspect Rusty Sparrows only hunt for grubs when they are feeding babies. A very vocal (though not too visible) family of Steller’s Jays turned up, which was a shock, because here in central Mexico I had never before seen this conifer-loving species below 2900 m (9500 ft).

The bird was a sparrow, that much was clear, but it didn’t seem to fit any of the easily boxes the other North American sparrows can be fairly easily sorted into. Superficially, it resembled the Black-chinned Sparrow of the southwestern United States with its gray chest and chestnut streaked with black back.
