This location is great as it is close to Jeanne’s Family, as well as a very short drive to the Billy Frank Jr. This refuge came up as #4 on a recent list of the top 25 National Wildlife Refuges that were featured in a great story here by 10000 Birds own Jason Crotty. I tried to get a better idea of what exactly the definition of cuckoo-dove is but am still not very clear about it – Wikipedia only offers the rather formal definition “any of several species of bird in the genera Macropygia , Reinwardtoena, and Turacoena of the pigeon family.” But I may well be wrong.

And when two of those eyes are professionally trained for wildlife monitoring, that is certainly a big plus. The same can be said, to a lesser extent, for the shorebirds, New World sparrows, warblers, and many other families. Four eyes are better than two. For example, of the 9 duck species we saw, 7 are winter-only.

As is typical for urban birding in the Central Valley, we had views of Yellow-throated Euphonia, Rufous-capped Warbler, Rufous-collared Sparrows, and Blue-gray Tanager.

Snowcap and White-tipped Sicklebill – Choice hummingbirds in a speciose, fantastic family of birds. Luckily, we birded in and around Cano Negro Wildlife Refuge on two separate trips and picked up all key species from that area! We saw both of these beauties at known sites near the edge of Braulio Carrillo National Park.

On the drive I had picked up the flamboyant Red-collared and Long-tailed Widowbirds , extraordinary members of the weaver family who’s ridiculous tails make them easy to spot even from a moving car. I did see a Greater-striped Swallow and a host of Capes – a Cape Sparrow , Cape Canary and best of all a Cape Longclaw.

It was here I managed to finally find my Brown Hyaena, making that family the first family of mammals of which I have seen every species (Spotted, Brown, Striped Hyaenas and Aardwolf)). Corey encountered a bunch of winners, but 24 Common Redpolls at Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge, in almost the exact same spot he saw them a couple of years ago, feeding on birch inflorescence by the East Pond, were easily his best birds of the weekend. On Sunday at Kissena Park I saw five species of sparrows. No time to take a picture.

This first birding vignette is actually from just before the weekend, when I was at Alley Pond Park on a day that I was miraculously released from work a tiny bit early and was hoping to find a Yellow-throated Warbler but settled for a Swamp Sparrow by Little Alley Pond. At the same location a Chipping Sparrow also cooperated for pictures.
