Seaside Sparrows Feeding Young at Cape May National Wildlife Refuge, Two Mile Unit

Last weekend we had an extended family weekend at a beach house in Wildwood, New Jersey, just north of Cape May. Well, not just at a salt marsh but at the Seaside Sparrows that make their living there, at least in the warmer months. In practice, this means that I spent a lot of time in a blind staring at a salt marsh.

The Wildlife Rehabilitator’s Wish List

The general public is out and about, birds and animals are raising their young, and human/wildlife interaction is at its peak. Violation of the law would be punishable by substantial fines, plus the cat owners would be required to perform community service at a local wildlife rehabilitation facility. Summer is high season.

The 2012 event was held at Minnesota Valley National Wildlife Refuge. The conference timed nicely with sparrow migration and everyone was anxious to get views of reported Nelson’s Sparrows that were obligingly hanging out in some mud along a beaver pond. Have we all gone completely mental?

The last weekend of January found me in the frosty Pacific Northwest, meeting some long over due work and family obligations. Nisqually Wildlife Refuge. There were Song Sparrows, Spotted Towhees, American Robins , and of course the ever popular Yellow-rumped Warbler.
