Amazingly, everyone showed up at dawn except for one person, who’d had a near-death experience with me on Colombia’s Sumapaz paramo, an acceptable excuse for a no-show. The ensuing conversation got me nicknamed “ Snow White ” by my young friends.

It is my opinion from personal experience that there is really no point in buying the BTX without the extender. With the use of the ME 1.7x magnification extender, which I cannot praise enough and highly recommend, they can be increased to 50x and 60x respectively. Nearly all extenders affect the quality of the image viewed. This one doesn’t.

I’m accustomed to seeing nothing while walking along some of these trails, but apart from a Golden-olive Woodpecker knocking the trunk of a palm tree at the entrance, it seemed extra quiet. All the while it moved a grand total of three times – vastly differing from all my prior experiences with this species!

Although Kibale famously offers a more complete chimpanzee experience, the long views the Royal Mile served up left me plenty satisfied.

This was where I set up my bird feeders, just one at first, then expanding as everyone expressed delight in seeing the Carolina Chickadees, Dark-eyed Juncos, and Downy Woodpeckers. I picked up a Downy Woodpecker, an every-day visitor. I was shocked when I found the first body, a female Towhee. The window silhouettes were gone.

For some reason that is hard for me to fathom, there is no such bird as a Cape Woodpecker. While the idea of a Ground Woodpecker sounds a bit absurd, it helps to know that this species mostly lives on ants, similar to the Wryneck (another woodpecker, though it does not look much like one). A challenge for young birders, maybe.

Every other year or so, we experience the lightest of frosts, nothing killing, and our warmest temperatures (in the 80s and 90s) occur in late spring. There are two species in the Old World woodpecker genus that sounds like birds that birders would never be able to see. Neither even makes their own nesting cavities; they use the abandoned holes of other woodpeckers. They are literal jinx birds in that their genus name is “ Jynx.”
