Yeah, unreliable in terms of which species you might see, but reliable in always giving you a unique, high quality birding experience in a forest jam-packed with life. The Eurasian Wryneck is the woodpecker that doesn’t look like a woodpecker, the bird with the portmanteau name that is also a medical condition (and which may remind some people of a Nora Ephron essay). But they are woodpeckers: the genus Jynx of the subfamily Jynginae of the Picidae family. It’s an open question.

This Grey-capped Pygmy Woodpecker in particular is a species I would like to get much better photos of. While the female is less hidden, sadly, it is also less attractive.

I never researched the resort, imagining that it lacked the amenities my family wanted, but visiting for dinner allowed us to rent its grandeur without forking over the considerable room rates.
