It helps that there is a little bird hide almost on top of the hill, guarded by a Chinese lady and attracting a substantial number of species of birds and birders. A Streak-breasted Scimitar Babbler made an early experience. There are some here, and compared to rainforests, they are surprisingly visible. So, what was there to see?

Clark’s Nutcracker , sometimes called the Crow Woodpecker , will always be paired with Lewis’s Woodpecker , the woodpecker that acts like a crow, both because of their cross-family likenesses and because of their namesakes. A mixed species flock of sparrows (american tree, field and chipping) was by the bike track parking lot. Once I looked at it through the binoculars I saw it was a male harrier.

This was a pleasant surprise if only because I’m so used to the more technical views presented in his field guides. Also, I wish I could use the tiny birds for my own presentations. Birds of the Indonesian Archipelago covers 1,417 species, 601 endemics, 98 vagrants, 8 introduced and 18 undescribed species. Only one bird species has become extinct (Javan Lapwing), but many others are endangered, with some considered close to extinction (not surprising in an area with species restricted to one or two small islands).

It’s a unique bird, even its scientific name is wonderful, so it’s not surprising that Gerard Gorman, Woodpecker Expert Supreme, has written a book all about the species. But they are woodpeckers: the genus Jynx of the subfamily Jynginae of the Picidae family. They are beautiful, but in a different way.
