I wish I had read this book. They complement Kricher’s text., The 11th chapter is on research and conservation challenges.

On more then one occasion I've seen cat prints on the sandy banks by the reservoir while fishing but always assumed them to be mountain lions or bobcats now im thinking they've been panther tracks all this time. I can tell you from first hand experience you're not crazy.

This diversity makes for a very unique birding experience. In addition to the hundred or so species of birds I regularly find here, there are Desert Foxes, Bobcats, Mountain Lions, Desert Bighorn Sheep and Mule Deer. Box canyons, long arroyos, and rolling desert vistas, accented with several different kinds of cactus.

They are not necessarily the biggest African animals, but represented those that were considered a real hunter’s worthy prey or “game” – the African Elephant, Cape Buffalo, Black Rhinoceros, Leopard and king of the jungle, the Lion (which of course doesn’t inhabit jungle but savanna!). In Asia they are even commonly kept as pets!

Marabous have also learnt another trick, and that is to follow vultures and scavenge off the remains of Lion and other large predator kills. On that first trip, I even saw some of the last 500 (Asiatic) Lions ! I may have very limited experience with dolphins and no experience with whales, but the illustrations show the entire animal in the way only divers can see it, without a second illustration of the tail shape, something whale-watchers can actually spot from a boat.

For 9 months of the year, this great, bellowing herd can be found in the Serengeti and watching the long lines of grunting wildebeest moving across the plains is truly a remarkable experience.
