Thought experiment

Reddit Animals

Although I love dogs they're too dependent on humans, it's true that stray/feral dogs can form packs and survive in the wild a regular dog like a golden retriever would get eaten by a lion instantly. They are much more independent and still behave similarly to wild cats they are still pets and rely on humans to survive.

Owling in Trinidad & Tobago

10,000 Birds

While preparing an article this week for a local newspaper on the nighttime denizens of Tobago, it crossed my mind that I never considered owls as a group, far less target species for any particular outing (except for a select few, upon which I shall expound here). Ferruginous Pygmy-Owl. He took a few pictures and moved on. Perhaps heard?

The Fallen Yellowlegs

10,000 Birds

I say unceremoniously – but I am using the human metric by which we decide what makes noise and what doesn’t. Animals obviously see death and experience it as we do, so the question is not one of if, but of how. Without so much as a splash, it slipped into the water. A moment of silence for the departed.

Nightingale-Thrushes

10,000 Birds

Birders throughout the Americas can experience the chalenges of Gull, Tern, New World Warbler, and Tyrant Flycatcher identification. My region, thankfully, only seems to host migratory Hermit Thrushes from this group. Our other two local Nightingale-Thrushes prefer to live much farther from human presence, and at higher altitudes.

Social Distancing

10,000 Birds

Yes, I know that birding can be turned into a social experience of sorts, but it will still always involve lots of silence and stealth. Even group birding mostly falls in the category of “parallel play” Which is just fine with me! After all, no human contact need be involved. Come as close as you like.
