I experienced this first hand while attending last year’s CBC , but because I’m motivated by feelings I didn’t consider this a true experience.

Yet, there is one group of birds where even I prefer photographs: gulls. From my experience, the gulling season is definitively winter. The authors are among the foremost experts on this taxing group. Yes, I do prefer paintings, among other reasons, for the sheer aesthetic pleasure of enjoying a particular artist’s style.

Birders throughout the Americas can experience the chalenges of Gull, Tern, New World Warbler, and Tyrant Flycatcher identification. My region, thankfully, only seems to host migratory Hermit Thrushes from this group. The Ruddy-capped Nightingale Thrush is, in my experience, the hardest of the three species to see.

Los bebés (the babys), Gustavo and Alberto, are the youngest members of the group, and only recently got their degrees. Taking Amy birding is an extremely rewarding experience, as she seems to know the calls of every bird species that exists. My birding buddies from the forum/chat include quite a few more biologists.

If you are into amazing avian-dense trail experiences, you either want to bird Pipeline Road or want to bird it again. But this type of singular experience can be enjoyed in the Old World as well. Although Kibale famously offers a more complete chimpanzee experience, the long views the Royal Mile served up left me plenty satisfied.

At first, the birds were absent, it was just that one shearwater, a sad lost Eastern Kingbird flying low over the waves, and groups of Brown Boobies making a beeline to feeding grounds. But my experience suggests there is a fair amount of geographical overlap between the two ranges in my area. I almost always see the Rufous-crowned Warbler in groups of two or three. Yellow Warblers are altitudinal migrants within the state of Michoacán, wintering in the lowlands and summering in the highlands.

For me, that experience encompassed an entire trip to Picayune Strand. In some places, so many Roseate Spoonbills joined the group that the sky appeared awash in pink. The experience really drove home to me how critical the Everglades are not only to Florida’s water, but also to its wildlife.
