After the Common Starling , my second bird of the morning becomes the largest eagle of Europe, the White-tailed Eagle , this one with a fairly white tail, yet still dark beak, that I estimate to be in its 3rd calendar year. Looking miserable with its feathers soaked, one yellow and blue European Bee-eater sits on a dead branch.

Hongbenghe is a very small village in Yunnan, right next to the border with Myanmar. The Crested Serpent Eagle is another species bound to suffer from a naming error in perpetuity. One road simply ends here, giving the place a real end-of-the-world feeling. The White-cheeked Partridge is classified as Near Threatened.

Two hundred yards further, the first Common Goldeneye and Smew started to appear and, while counting Smew and geese, a Great Bittern took flight from one stand of reeds to another, right in front of us. And I didn’t pay enough attention because one very dark eagle flew by at the same time, an adult Greater Spotted Eagle.

One Common Raven is disappearing towards its nest among the branches of the poplar plantation, only to reappear a few minutes later to give a good chase – aerial acrobatics included – to its first neighbour, the White-tailed Eagle which breeds in the vicinity. For a much larger Eurasian Eagle Owl, it compresses to look like a branch, even aiming it’s more bark like wing feathers towards the predator and closes its eyes, to complete the disguise, small owls will do that with us too. After careful scrutiny of images, it seems that the Blue Sheep lost its footing as it tried to escape but in the process it kicked up a load of gravel and dust, right into the Snow Leopard’s face, temporarily blinding the cat. Wedge-tailed Eagles roam the skies, along with Brown Falcon, Black Kites , and Nankeen Kestrels. This Pied Butcherbird was right at the base to Ayres Rock. This Wedge-tailed Eagle was sitting along side one of the roads, eyeing a small road killed Kangaroo. But the diversity, that I have found to be Australia, remains.

These predatory thrushes have been known to prey on albatross and Spectacled Petrel eggs, the young of Great Shearwaters and have even been known to remove storm-petrel species from their burrows and kill them. Interestingly, Black-winged Stilts display laterality – that is, they preferentially use one eye (the right one) to find prey. But I am grumbling a little bit about it.
