Dalmatian Pelicans and Eurasian Spoonbills were flying above the beach, sometimes above the hotel garden, while Golden Oriole and Scops Owl could be heard. I recorded the song, which Merlin app identified as a Skylark’s, but I had enough experience to know better: it turned out to be a Greater Short-toed Lark. Now, I am done.

During a two-year long moratorium on hunting in T&T, I had some of the most incredible birding experiences. A pair of Ferruginous Pygmy-Owls called to each other, driving the passerine population into a panic. It was difficult to ignore the din caused by the pygmy-owls, and eventually we caved to curiosity and followed our ears.

Lesser White-fronted Goose and Greater Spotted Eagle came to mind, but what else? I counted them very roughly, but I do have a lot of experience estimating flocks. I am scoping Great Cormorants roosting in their colony in the (now dry) flooded forest, there is one… eagle to the right of them. One done, three more to go.

I was waiting at the entrance gate for everyone in our group to gather, when I remembered that someone had told me about nesting owls at the Taj. We had dipped hard on a long-staying (but not always reliable) Ash-throated Flycatcher at Pettigrew State Park, but while searching for the bird one of the tour participants found a roosting Great Horned Owl , a really nice way to close out the day. The owl had put me at 195 and I felt pretty confident I would get there.

Keel-billed Motmot has even made an appearance and sometimes, there is a roosting Black-and-white Owl. This immature Verreaux’s Eagle-owl was one of the first birds I saw at Kruger, on the introductory afternoon ride through the park. Verreaux’s Eagle-Owls are amongst the heaviest and longest owls in the world. The small group was a good counterpart to the large, convivial ABA Safari group of 98 birders.

Not only did it fly in but it attacked a Bald Eagle! The Bald Eagle was flying upside-down with talons up trying to ward off the small white falcon! Brian Laben had a wonderful experience seeing this rarity in upstate New York (or, is that mid-state? Within 15 minutes the Gyrfalcon flew in. After that, the Gyrfalcon was gone.

I can speak from experience that this place should only be accessed by a 4 x 4 vehicle. The bizarre Pel’s Fishing Owl by Adam Riley (Rockjumper Birding Tours) Chirinda Apalis by Adam Riley Further north of Haroni-Rusitu one comes to the Bvumba Highlands. Birding the grounds is productive as the 370-plus bird-list attests.
