I had long yearned of seeing a wild Harpy Eagle and was genuinely thrilled to hear about an active nest not too far from where we would be staying. Selfishly, I was a bit disappointed that the lack of water turned our two-hour commute via river to see the nest of the mighty Harpy Eagle into a no-go. And waited. Still, nothing.

As such, it offers some unique birding experiences. Since I have limited experience with eastern Mexico, and even less experience with tropical species, I enthusiastically accepted. Here in Mexico, they call Ospreys “Fishing Eagles” But Tabasco has a second bird of prey that fishes. Good choice!

Interestingly, a bird of prey set off a psychological experiment. Wait a minute, it’s very light on the back, almost like a Booted Eagle. And then something strange happened… For some reason, my focus continued on the back feathers and the pattern, and the obvious harrier showed more and more characteristics of the eagle.

A couple of presentations were also given; one by Diego Quesada of Birding Experiences regarding count routes, and another given by Juan Diego Vargas of Lifer Tours that provided interesting and novel information about the count species, the Keel-billed Motmot. Lunch at the tavern brought a European Serin , and the drive back added a Little Owl on a sign post by the road, and a few soaring birds: White Stork , Great White Pelican and a Short-toed Eagle. A bit later on, saltworks contained more than a hundred Greater Flamingos , plus one of several roadside European Rollers. Now, I am done.
