This Bald Eagle, photographed by Corey, was after Blue-winged Teal in Florida, not Atlantic Puffins in Maine. To wit: In an experiment informally called the “Cheetos Challenge,” a scientist investigated whether magpies or crows would be quicker to develop a taste for Cheetos—and which birds would ultimately steal them from the others.

The first stop of the morning: young White–tailed Eagle , right next to the road and several dozen Rooks around. The world record holder is the town of Kikinda, further north, with 700 birds in their town square which has recently become an officially protected owl habitat – a small, urban nature reserve. The associated bird species seek out drongos, apparently relying upon them heavily for protection. My cats refuse to even try Fiery Minivets. The drongo perches above the flock, snatching insects that they disturb, and keeping an eye out for predators that might go unnoticed by its hunting flock-mates.

Now, dont get me wrong, there have been some nice birds, and locations in between, but these two experiences are just so hard to put out of my mind. The show stopper was his Eagle-owl. He also had nearly twenty other species there to show, with Harris Hawks, Peregrine Flacons and a pair o f Golden Eagles , just to name a few.

Danum Valley is a conservancy that protects a large area of lowland rainforest in Sabah in northeastern Borneo. Two highlights of the walk back were a bright green Greater Green Leafbird and a Lesser Fish Eagle following the road above our heads. That’s a threatened habitat, and one much sought after by wildlife enthusiasts.

Sometimes they have to protect their catches from piratic African Fish Eagles who swoop down as soon as they that see a Saddle-bill has successfully caught a fish. It is quite a sight to experience hundreds of Abdim’s Stork dropping out of the skies from seemingly thin air, to gorge on burnt or fleeing insects and rodents.

A good way up one of the tallest pines is an Eagle’s nest. Every year there manage to be two eagles up there in that nest. Ducks are easier prey for the Eagle. You can tell when the Eagle is aloft because the Loons alarm call. Every now and then you see an Eagle and a Loon interact a bit. So, no Eagles maybe.
