The many small ponds and waterways attract quite a few ducks, though presumably due to their China experience, they are extremely wary of people. Ferruginous Ducks are relatively rare here – a pity, given how attractive they are. Mandarin Ducks look a bit like they have just been stolen from a toy shop, at least the males.

It’s relatively small as ducks go, and certainly doesn’t have stunning plumage, but it is fairly attractive and has a distinctive white ring around the eye which helps distinguish it from the closely related Chestnut Teal of Australia. Case in point, calling Aythya collaris a Ring-necked Duck highlights perhaps the least obvious thing about it, whereas its kissing cousin A. fuligula is most definitely a Tufted Duck. The whole setup is very nicely balanced and at just over 2.5kg I can easily hold it for longer periods without suffering from fatigue. It is much easier to get up closer to a bird, point the scope past a branch or to duck down low to get a head shot which is isolated against the background.
